The Last Word

By Terry Booker

During the last four months I have been in three very different pods, all having a very similar void – a hunger for the word of God. I’ve always had a love for that word so I guess that’s why when the task of getting the C.O. to open the classroom door and calling the brothers to study with me fell upon me I was reluctant, but my heart told me that this is something I must do. The first few times my heart skipped, like I was in a marathon. But now it just flows like water because it’s all truth, all love, all real, and these are the things I’ve said to my brothers. If today was my last day to talk to all of them my last word would probably be leave these doors being prepared, think of life as a treasure map. God is the compass, Jesus is the canteen full of water. Every day is so precious if we can just live it as such. Expect everything out of the world, never take no for an answer, as long as the question is good. The goal is not to get lost so until we meet again. This is my last word.

Ink

by Terry Booker

Ink has been around for hundreds of years, but when we think of ink sometimes we don’t realize how powerful it is. What comes to mind for me is being in synch - mind to arm; to pen; to paper. If the things I say are confidential, all I need is some fire and my ink can be gone in vapor. Many things changed in history when they put ink to paper, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, even the final period on Timothy McVeigh’s death sentence. From the very first thing you wrote in first grade, to the letters on your diploma on graduation day. On the Hallmark card to wish that special someone happy birthday, to all the lyrics of Lil’ Wayne and all the way back in the day to Marvin Gaye. From maps for planes so they don’t get lost to fat, filthy checks that come from your boss. So I guess you could say it’s easy to convey, how a pen with ink can be truly mightier than the sword!
