Who Am I...?

Submitted by Wendy Jason

Background/Preparation: Find writing sample focusing on identity.

Materials: Writing sample, pens, journals

Objectives: Connect with what is important to us, what makes us who we are. Create connection, a sense of trust within group, safety.

Procedure:

  1. Check-in
  2. Write the word "Identity" on the whiteboard.  Lead a group discussion on the topic, "What does identity mean to you?" List words on the whiteboard that group members come up with that have to do with identity.  It is important to write down ALL words that people say.
  3. Read the sample you have brought to class.  Ask group members to participate by reading a few sentences each.
  4. Silent writing on the topic, “Who am I?” for 20-30 minutes.
  5. Ask participants if they are willing to share what they have written one by one.
  6. Feedback and closing

Dialogue and Harvest:

1.     What makes us who we are?

2.     What are the challenges to revealing who we are?

3.     How does how we see ourselves differ from how we believe others perceive us? And, how do the perceptions of others impact our views of ourselves?

Notes:  Very rich topic, fun for all to explore.
